Volkswagen Becomes Presenting Sponsor of U.S. Soccer

VW’s One Goal of Supporting Soccer in the U.S.

We are thrilled to announce that Volkswagen of America Inc. has announced a landmark sponsorship with the U.S. Soccer Federation! From now until 2022 Volkswagen of America will be the presenting automotive partner to U.S. Soccer. With soccer being the most popular sport worldwide we are so excited that Volkswagen of America is taking an interest in supporting this sport in the U.S.

While soccer is the most popular sport in the world, it’s only the 5th most popular sport in the U.S. and Volkswagen of America is aiming to change that. While the overall goal is to increase soccer’s popularity in the U.S., VW’s primary focus is on funding programs that help produce more female coaches. Currently 47% of youth soccer players in the U.S. are women, yet only 15% of coaches are female.*

The sport’s popularity among young girls and women can be attributed to the amazing successes of the US Women’s National Team in the past 10 years. Currently the US Women’s National Team is ranked #1 in the world according to the FIFA World Rankings and they won the most recent women’s World Cup in 2015! A huge contributor to the 2015 US Women’s National Team World Cup win was head coach Jill Ellis. Among Ellis’s many awards she was the first American to receive the FIFA World Coach of the Year for Women’s Soccer award and was named the CONCACAF Female Coach of the Year in 2015 following the women’s team world cup win.^

Ellis is proof that women coaches are incredibly important to the success of women’s sports teams. “We need more women in coaching,” said Ellis from the U.S. Women’s National Team training camp in Portugal. “Female athletes can relate to female coaches and provides them with the aspiration to get into coaching.  I’m looking forward to seeing how this partnership will provide more opportunities to develop female coaches in the future.”*

The next Women’s World Cup will be in France this June and we are very excited to watch Jill Ellis and the rest of the U.S. Women’s Soccer Team!
